Facebook: Celebs get verified accounts and can use pseudonyms

lady-gaga-hair.jpgToday Facebook will begin offering a select number of celebrities and high profile users the chance to verify their accounts and use a pseudonym, according to TechCrunch.

The Facebook team will be reaching out to those with a high number of subscribers (you can't go applying for this kind of status yourself yet) and will be asking them to change their account to a verified status. After they've proved who they are, they'll also be given the option to use a pseudonym too to distinguish them from "normal" users that may happen to have the same birth name, which will be great for the Lady Gaga's and Madonna's of the world.

The move to add verified accounts means those lucky few will appear much more frequently in the "people to subscribe to" sidebar. However, it's not just all about promoting celebrities and forcing us to follow their updates, it's a good decision for users too, as it means there's less chance of people pretending to be celebrities or less chance of users adding someone with the same name as a celebrity by mistake.

But interestingly Facebook won't be displaying a badge on verified accounts (like the little blue one on Twitter), it'll just present the option to display a pseudonym, which kind of seems a bit silly when you've gone to all the trouble of verifying an account...
